Do It Yourself Hair Care products:
- Clarifiying Shampoo + Conditioner
So this super easy DIY shampoo+ conditioning treatment can actually completely replace your store-bought variety in your hair care routine. Clarifiying shampoos work especially well to remove buildup from hair products and dirt over time. Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is a mild alkali salt that works to break down dirt and oil within your hair. Apple cider vinegar works to kill bacteria and hold in moisture (called a humectant). It’s also an acid which neutralizes the alkaline conditions of the baking soda, and returns your hair to its natural pH level.
i. Baking Soda Shampoo:
- 4-5 teaspoons baking soda
- 400-500ml warm water
Shake the mixture to ensure it’s well mixed and apply to wet scalp. Rub mixture into scalp and let sit for 1-2 mins. Then rinse
ii. Apple Cider Vinegar Conditioner
- 1 part apple cider vinegar
- 4 parts warm water
Apply liberally to hair from scalp to roots, rub into hair and allow to sit. Rinse well to remove all the apple cider vinegar (cuz yea it smells like…well…vinegar).

I’ve also included a recipe for a DIY Hair Growth Oil containing some of these essential oils. Feel free to select the combination of oils that works best for you.

|Lemon||Lightens blonde hair||With heat, a lot of lemon can turn hair orange|
|Peppermint||Stimulates growth||May irritate very sensitive scalps|
|Rosemary||Adds shine||Great for normal or dry hair|
|Tea Tree||Astringent||Good for oily hair|
Hair Growth Oil
- 2 ounces coconut oil
- 1 ounce castor oil
- 1 ounce apricot kernel oil
- 12 drops rosemary essential oil
- 6 drops lavender essential oil
- 6 drops peppermint essential oil
- 6 drops clary sage essential oil
Mix ingredients together and apply a few drops to your hair using your palms and fingertips. Be fabulous!
- Curl Defining Cream 1 – Shea Butter
This one is for the blessed curly-haired few among us, and those that aspire to be among the blessed curly-haired few. [A quick note on apricot kernel oil: apricot kernel oil is derived from (duh!) apricots. It is rich in Vitamin E so it promotes hair growth, and it also helps to detangle hair, reduces dry scalp, makes hair shiny and softens hair texture. Another wonder oil! It can also be used for skincare]
- 1/4 cup raw Shea butter
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil
- 1 tsp apricot kernel oil
- ¼ cup pure aloe vera gel
- 10 drops rosemary essential oil
- 2 drops chamomile essential oil
Melt the shea butter and coconut oil in a double boiler (or make your own double boiler by fitting a large bowl over a large pot of boiling water). Place the mixture back into the refrigerator for 15 minutes until it begins to solidify. Whip mixture until creamy and add apricot kernel oil.
Add the pure aloe vera gel then blend until fully combined (the longer you blend the smoother the cream). Transfer to a mason jar and store, ensuring no water can get into the cream. Apply to hair!
- Curl-Defining Cream 2 – Mango Coconut
Something extra for the blessed curly-heads.
- 1 part mango butter
- 1 part coconut oil
- 1 tablespoon apricot kernel oil
Mix mango butter and coconut oil over a saucepan, then add the apricot seed oil. Mix, allow to cool and store.
